What Happened at the 2021 Astroworld Festival?
The deadly incident came hours after a massive crowd stormed the perimeter of NRG Park, creating a chaotic situation for security personnel and event staff.
Houston Police Chief Troy Finner reportedly visited event founder Travis Scott’s trailer on the day of the show to share his concerns over crowd safety. However, despite the organizers’ knowledge of safety issues, the event continued as scheduled. The situation quickly turned deadly around 9:30pm when the crowd of approximately 50,000 concert-goers surged toward the front of the stage as Scott appeared for his performance, and widespread panic ensued.
Ten people between the ages of 9 and 27 were killed as a result of the crowd surge. According to Houston Fire Chief Samuel Peña, more than 300 injured patients were treated at a field hospital, and 23 people were rushed to hospitals.
While authorities continue to investigate the crime scene, here are some essential facts to remember:
- Large groups of fans stormed the perimeter of the venue hours before it became deadly.
- HPD Police Chief visited Travis Scott in his trailer on the day of the event to share his concerns about the crowd. However, the event organizers chose to continue the operation.
- Live Nation, the event organizer, has a history of OSHA violations and has been linked to 794 injuries and 194 deaths since 2006.
