Causes of Car Accidents: Speeding

Mar 6, 2020 | Car Accidents

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, there were 35,092 car accident fatalities in 2015. 9,557 of those fatalities involved speeding, which accounts for 27% of the total car accident deaths. From 2014 to 2015, there was a 3% increase in speeding-related fatalities. In 2015, 32% of males aged 15–24 years old who were involved in a fatal crash were speeding. In the same year, 45% of all drivers who were speeding had been drinking.

Texas was ranked by the NHTSA as the state with the most speeding-related traffic fatalities in 2015, with a total of 1,105 deaths. Those speeding-related deaths accounted for 31% of the total traffic fatalities in Texas. According to the Texas Department of Transportation, Harris County ranks second in the state for the highest number of speed-involved fatal crashes next to Dallas County. In 2016, Harris County experienced 83 fatal, 91 fatalities, 128 incapacitating injuries, and a total of 1,573 speed-related crashes.
The NHTSA identifies the following as some of the major consequences of speeding:

  • Increased probability of losing control of the vehicle
  • Reduced effectiveness of the equipment that is meant to protect the occupants
  • Increased distance required to stop safely
  • More severe crashes and more serious injuries

People often speed because they are running late, are frustrated in traffic, and feel like their behaviors will not directly affect someone’s life. None of these rationalizations are a justification for the tragic outcomes that speeding and the feelings of road rage that can result in speeding can cause. The NHTSA provides a resource on how to avoid driving aggressively for drivers who want to learn how to drive more safely.
