Pedestrian Accidents in Texas

Houston, TX - Bicyclist Killed by Hit & Run Driver on Ella Blvd near Winter Bay Lane

Information gathered by the Texas Department of Transportation states that one in five fatal traffic collisions in Texas involve a pedestrian. In 2020, the Lone Star State saw close to 5,000 pedestrian crashes that resulted in approximately 1,200 injuries and 730 deaths. This was about a nine percent increase in pedestrian fatalities from the previous year.

Pedestrians are some of the most vulnerable users of the road because they are not equipped with protective gear like seat belts, airbags, and bumpers. All drivers share an important responsibility to abide by the rules of the road in order to lessen the number of pedestrian deaths. Some tips to prevent a deadly encounter include:

  • Especially when turning, always yield the right-of-way to those walking/riding bikes
  • Avoid distractions while driving, put your phone away/on silent until you reach your destination
  • Stop for pedestrians at crosswalks
  • Use caution when passing stopped buses/other vehicles

If you or someone you love has recently been hurt in a pedestrian accident in Texas, a Texas personal injury lawyer may be able to help you recover. You may be suffering physically, emotionally, and financially after being hurt in an accident. Especially if your crash was caused by a negligent driver, you may be eligible to collect financial compensation that can help cover medical costs, lost wages, and more.
