Houston, TX – Fatal Hit & Run Takes 1 Life on Bellfort near Westover Dr

Oct 17, 2021 | Houston, TX Traffic Accidents

Houston, TX (October 16, 2021) – A fatal hit and run accident took place on the evening of Friday, October 15 in Houston. Reports show that the wreck occurred around 8:30 p.m. in the 7000 block of Bellfort Avenue.

Information provided by Houston police shows that a pedestrian was crossing the street near Westover Drive on Bellfort Avenue when he was hit by a Nissan Sentra. Paramedics who responded to the scene pronounced the pedestrian deceased shortly after the wreck took place.

Authorities stated that, after the incident, the driver of the Nissan traveled about a block away from the crash scene before stopping. He then got out of the vehicle and walked away. A female passenger who was in the car at the time then got into the driver’s seat and drove away.

The Nissan was later found by police unoccupied in a residential area. It had blood on the front end and damage to the windshield. The Nissan is being processed for fingerprints and DNA to try to determine the identity of the people who fled the scene after fatally striking the man.

It’s likely that the driver will face a failure to stop and render an aid charge if arrested. Authorities in Houston continue to investigate.

Our sincere condolences are with the family of the deceased victim at this time.

Nothing further has currently been reported.

Houston Hit & Runs

Houston, TX - Fatal Hit & Run Takes 1 Life on Bellfort near Westover Dr

A report found that approximately 65 percent of those who lose their lives in fatal hit-and-run crashes are either pedestrians or bicyclists. This is partially due to the fact that pedestrians and bicyclists are basically unprotected from other vehicles on the roadway during collisions, making them the most vulnerable travelers at any given time.

The state of Texas ranks number eight on the list for the states with the most hit-and-run crashes that occur in the United States yearly. In 2016, more than 2,000 hit-and-runs took place in the Lone Star State, the highest number since 2009. Deaths from hit-and-run crashes have increased in the United States by about 7.2% each year since 2009.
