Williams Hart & Boundas Lawyers are Leaders in National Litigation

Representing Survivors of Sexual Assault Against Lyft and Uber

Our Commitment

In early 2019, a woman approached our firm after an Uber driver sexually assaulted her during an Uber ride. We filed a lawsuit on her behalf in 2019. Our firm has been representing survivors of rideshare sexual assaults for almost five years now. We are proud to be one of the first law firms who took these companies on. We are inspired and emboldened by our clients, thousands of incredibly brave individuals, who have chosen to come forward to hold Uber and Lyft accountable.

Given how long we have been involved in the litigation, Williams Hart & Boundas lawyers have been appointed to the Plaintiffs’ Leadership Committees in both the Uber and Lyft coordinated actions in San Fransisco Superior Court. Our founding partner, John Eddie Williams argued at the recent Judicial Panel on Multidistrict Litigation hearing in Lexington, advocating for a Multidistrict Litigation (“MDL”) be formed for Uber sexual assault cases in the Northern District of California. On October 4, 2023, the Panel on Multidistrict Litigation granted plaintiffs’ request for centralization in an MDL under the Honorable Charles R. Breyer in the Northern District of California.

We have been in this fight against Uber and Lyft for over four years and will not rest until we see Uber and Lyft change their practices so that rideshare passengers are safe when they hire a rideshare for the purpose that Uber and Lyft advertise – to get them from one place to another safely. Sexual assault should never be part of that equation.

You are not alone if you have been assaulted and/or harassed in any way in an Uber or a Lyft. Sexual assault and harassment can take many forms. We are here to support you. If you or someone you love was sexually assaulted or harassed by an Uber or Lyft driver, please contact us so that we can help you.

We are here for you. We believe you. And we will fight for you.

Representing Thousands of Rideshare Clients

We are leaders in this litigation.

Williams Hart & Boundas LLP specializes in complex cases that involve thousands of survivors. Our experienced attorneys, paralegals, and client representatives form a team that has fought multimillion-dollar corporations across the country and won for decades. We have reviewed hundreds of thousands of documents, hired top experts, and documented firsthand accounts from our clients in this litigation alone. We understand the lasting impact of sexual assault and are fighting for justice.

Attorney Margret Lecocke was appointed to the Lyft Litigation Plaintiffs’ Steering Committee in May 2021

As a member of the Lyft Steering Committee, Margret is dedicated to supporting survivors. She personally speaks with survivors daily, helps them feel comfortable and safe enough to address the extremely traumatic assault that they endured, and encircles them with the support they need to stand up to Lyft and Uber. As one of the first firms in the country with a trial setting, the team of lawyers and staff at Williams Hart developed the Lyft liability case, taking 20+ depositions, securing and working with all expert witnesses, and reviewing thousands of pages of internal documents.

This litigation has changed my practice. I have always fought for people who have been injured or treated unfairly, but rideshare is a different situation. Our rideshare clients are brave beyond words and they are true survivors. They have already weathered an unimaginable storm and now have the courage to come forward and fight these companies. It is not easy, but I dedicate all of my energy to making sure they feel supported and prepared. To hear one of my clients tell me that she never could have made it through the case without me at her side is the highest compliment and the reason why I so strongly urge others to come forward reclaim their power.

Attorney Walt Cubberly was appointed Co-Lead Counsel in both the Lyft and Uber Litigation

Walt Cubberly was one of only 3 attorneys selected by the Judge to represent survivors against Lyft and Uber. As co-lead in both JCCP, Walt is leading the fight against these rideshare companies. As co-lead counsel, he is coordinating the efforts of law firms across the country. Williams Hart and Boundas have been at the forefront of this litigation from the very beginning. Our firm filed its first rideshare case before Uber and Lyft released limited public reports regarding the growing problem of sexual assault in their vehicles.

I know our clients have been through something unthinkable and it’s my job to fight my guts out to get them the justice they deserve. We are really here for them.”

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does it cost to hire a lawyer from Williams Hart & Boundas?

Our firm takes cases on a “contingency fee basis” which means that our fee is taken out of the money we win for our clients. There are no fees unless we win or resolve your case. We offer a free case evaluation with no obligation so that prospective clients can make an informed decision before hiring us.

What if I was drunk when the assault occurred?

Drunk driving kills thousands across the country. Calling a ride was the responsible thing to do! Survivors of sexual assault need to know that intoxication is never an excuse for a driver’s inappropriate behavior.

Can I file a rideshare sexual assault lawsuit on behalf of my child?

WHB has helped parents and legal guardians pursue cases on behalf of injured children. Children are entitled to legal recourse and our firm is prepared to help you navigate this sensitive and confidential matter.

Is this a “Class Action Lawsuit?”

No. We file individual cases.

What is a Jane Doe Case?

Due to the sensitive nature of these cases, we file on behalf of our clients anonymously. This means that the legal proceedings use the name “Jane Doe” rather than an individual’s name to protect client privacy.

If you are interested in pursuing a case in your name rather than anonymously, we can also prepare your pleadings in your name. This is something you can discuss with Walt or Margret.

What is a JCCP Judicial Council Coordinated Proceeding?

When a defendant has injured as many people as Uber and Lyft have, a JCCP is one way for the court system to efficiently deal with the volume of cases. Coordinating an action allows lawyers representing survivors to consolidate and coordinate many individual cases under one judge who is  familiar with the evidence needed to understand each case.

What is a JPML hearing?

The United States Judicial Panel on Multidistrict Litigation (JPML) is a special body within the United States federal court system that oversees cases that affect multiple court systems at once. This panel has the authority to determine whether issues ongoing in two or more federal judicial districts should be transferred to a single federal district court for pretrial proceedings.

What is an MDL?

A multidistrict litigation (MDL) is typically formed when multiple lawsuits are pending against a single defendant. An MDL is an efficient coordination of plaintiffs who have filed separate lawsuits under one judge. The coordinated cases are all individual, but share a significant amount of evidence, discovery, and procedural requirements.

Group therapy sessions.

Speaking out is hard. We are committed to fighting for accountability and financial compensation for our clients as part of their healing journey. Due to the extreme nature of this case, we are also providing additional therapeutic resources through Gomez Counseling Services. Our clients’ stories have left a lasting impression on the staff of WHB and we are passionate about helping our clients recover.

After speaking with thousands of clients here’s what our staff have to say about the case.

Sonji

Working on these cases has been eye-opening for me. I’ve become more empathic, patient, understanding, and open-minded. When speaking to these Ladies, I often say, this could be me, my daughter, granddaughter, mother, sister, nieces, etc.

Crystal

Working on this docket has been different from any other litigation. Rideshare is more personal. …[These] cases are complex, and they stay with you.

Roxann

This case has been truly eye-opening for me. I have three daughters of my own and can’t even fathom what it would be like if they went through what some of our clients have.  I admire and am in awe of our clients’ strength, to not just endure what they have but to come forward and speak up about it.

Lisa

It has been an honor to work on this case… I have a strong desire to help these ladies

I will forever be grateful that I chose the right firm for my Roundup case. From the first phone call until the verdict, I have always felt so comfortable and respected by everyone I worked with from the firm. I was represented by people who truly care about their clients and their needs and feelings. I wish there was an option to give them 1000 stars on here! They are now much more than my attorneys... I am blessed to call them my friends!
