New Waverly, TX (July 13, 2021) – A vehicle collision between a tractor-trailer and a compact car trapped one of the drivers underneath the oversized truck at about 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday, July 13th.
The accident took place on Interstate 45 between New Waverly and Huntsville.
First responders reported that the driver of a Honda Civic was pinned underneath the tractor-trailer. Eyewitnesses reported seeing the vehicle leave the roadway, then swerve sharply back across the interstate and underneath a passing tractor-trailer. The car, now stuck under the trailer, was dragged for several hundred yards as the truck operator tried to stop.
The car’s sole occupant, an older male, was trapped behind the wheel and seemed to have sustained life-threatening injuries.
New Waverly Firefighters used hydraulic rescue tools and rescue airbags to lift the truck’s trailer high enough to reach the passenger compartment. Crews were able to extricate the driver in about 15 minutes, while Walker County EMS crews worked to stabilize and ready him for transport.
A medical helicopter was dispatched to the scene. After it landed on the interstate, the victim was loaded onto the helicopter and airlifted off the scene at about 2:00 p.m.
DPS officials said that the driver of the tractor-trailer, 41-year-old David Gerald, a resident of Arlington, was unharmed during the incident.
The driver of the Toyota, 49-year-old Isaac Gyekye, a resident of Willis, was med flighted to Huntsville Hospital and pronounced deceased by medical staff.
Troopers with the Texas Department of Public Safety are conducting the crash investigation.
